Course Description

This continuing education training examines contemporary addiction counseling across the substance use disorder treatment continuum. Participants will explore substance use disorders as complex biopsychosocial conditions shaped by biological, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors. The course emphasizes the responsibilities of addiction counselors and evidence-based, person-centered, recovery-oriented care. Participants will receive instruction in screening, biopsychosocial assessment, risk evaluation, co-occurring disorders, and use of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria for level-of-care decisions and treatment planning. Assessment findings are integrated into individualized, strengths-based plans addressing client needs, readiness for change, recovery goals, and barriers to engagement. The training also covers therapeutic alliance development, motivational interviewing, clinical interviewing, psychoeducation, relapse prevention, trauma-informed care, cultural responsiveness, recovery capital, social determinants of health, and evidence-based interventions used in substance use treatment. Additional topics include case management, referrals, care coordination, documentation, professional boundaries, confidentiality, ethical and legal responsibilities, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Clinical examples and case studies support practical application across behavioral health settings. This course is designed for substance use and mental health counselors, social workers, psychologists, case managers, peer recovery professionals, addiction treatment professionals, and other behavioral health providers. Approximate completion time: 480 minutes. Instructional time includes educational materials, case studies, reflective activities, the post-test, and course evaluation. Participants must complete all materials, earn a passing post-test score, and complete the evaluation to receive continuing education credit.
