Course Description

CNS Stimulants: Clinical Implications, Neurobiology, and Treatment Considerations is a self-paced professional training designed for clinicians who want to better understand how central nervous system stimulants affect brain functioning, client presentation, diagnosis, and treatment planning. CNS stimulants are among the most commonly encountered substances in behavioral health practice and may be used medically, recreationally, or as part of a broader pattern of substance use. This course provides a practical, clinically relevant overview of commonly used stimulants, including cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription amphetamines, methylphenidate, caffeine, and nicotine, with attention to their pharmacological properties, patterns of use, and associated clinical risks. Participants will explore the neurobiological mechanisms of CNS stimulants, including their effects on dopamine, norepinephrine, reward pathways, alertness, motivation, mood, and cognition. The training also addresses short- and long-term physiological and psychological effects, including tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, binge-and-crash patterns, cardiovascular risk, stimulant-induced psychosis, and complications associated with high-risk routes of administration or polysubstance use. Clinical implications for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment are emphasized throughout the course, particularly in the context of Stimulant Use Disorder, co-occurring mental health conditions, trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis, and prescription stimulant misuse. Participants will also consider applied case examples to strengthen clinical decision-making, psychoeducation, treatment planning, relapse prevention, and appropriate referral considerations. This course is especially valuable for counselors, therapists, social workers, addiction professionals, and behavioral health providers working with clients who use CNS stimulants recreationally, medically, academically, occupationally, or as part of a broade
